The Power of Bugs at the Stables in Gibside.

The Power of Bugs Exhibition

Steve Pardue September 19, 2022

We have been working on an exhibition called: THE POWER OF BUGS for the National Trust at Gibside. What has made this really interesting is the collaborative approach we took to design the exhibition.

Ranger led

We began looking at the content through a series of workshops we hosted allowing for the rangers and engagement team to contribute to the design and themes, starting with “What is a Bug?”. From this humble beginning we began to develop the look and feel of the display.

Empathy for insects

It became quite clear that we all loved BUGS and wanted others to love bugs the way we do. So we wanted people to look at the intimate lives of the subjects. Personally I wanted an exhibition that was more akin to a gallery exhibition and chose an artist Rae Gray to paint the images. Her obvious love for the subject was key to how we wanted people to see these fascinating creatures.

Large and wonderful

By taking the small and blowing up large we were able to create beautiful displays of artwork coupled with storylines about the lives and wonders of our most important wildlife. A slug 6 feet high takes on a different look doesn't it - no longer does it look yuck but instead the true beauty can be seen and appreciated.
